What does it mean when my child says, he/she "S.O.A.R"ed today?
At Clough...we all S.O.A.R! SOAR stands for Safe, On task, Act KCR, and Responsible. We believe it is important to explicitly teach what appropriate behavior looks like in the many different settings in our school. The SOAR acronym evolved out of the implementation of PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Support). This is a multi-tiered approach to social, emotional and behavioral support. The broad purpose of PBIS is to improve the effectiveness, efficiency, and equity of schools. PBIS improves social, emotional, and academic outcomes for all students (www.pbis.org).
Each week, during our KCR block (Kind, Caring, and Respectful), our students learn more about a variety of character traits. These lessons focus on teamwork, empathy, sportsmanship, and problem-solving skills. During this weekly block, the guidance counselor (Mr. Hanson) and the specialist teachers incorporate lessons from the Second Step Curriculum. This is a research-based program that promotes skills for social/emotional learning and anti-bullying.
